White metal, 45mm. This important medal opens the classic Hibler-Kappen reference, and marks the completion of the Erie Canal, or the "Union of the Erie with the Atlantic" as the obverse legend states.

Ground was broken for the Canal project on July 4, 1817 and was completed October 26, 1825. This canal opened up the western states to the eastern markets and the rest of the world, cementing New York City as the most important port in America.

This medal was issued by the Common Council of the City of New York in honor of the canal's completion. The dies were engraved by Charles Cushing Wright after designs by Archibald Robertson.

A classic piece of American history!
